Grace Project Update: Schematic Design Complete, Community Name Creation Opportunity
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – New Hanover County is in the design stage of a new county building in downtown Wilmington that will create a purpose-built public library alongside a modern Cape Fear museum. The new building will anchor cultural resources in downtown Wilmington, create a new synergy in services and enhance the visitor experience.

As indicated in the floor plans, the library will continue to provide adult services, children’s services and local history services, and will add enhanced services for teens and tweens to ensure that all citizens have a place to go. learn and grow. It will also have two outdoor reading terraces, one dedicated specifically to children on the first floor and one dedicated to adults on the second floor, and will integrate natural light throughout to make it a welcoming and open space.
The museum experience will be greatly enhanced with an immersive planetarium / theater, a gallery for Cape Fear Stories, a gallery on health and nutrition, a Science Matters gallery, an outdoor exhibition space and a changing gallery to accommodate a wider range of traveling exhibitions. Many outdoor spaces will also be dedicated to the museum and to community celebrations and meetings. The building will also have a shared multipurpose space that the library and museum can use for additional programming opportunities.
Once the schematic design is complete, the development team will begin to work closely with a landscape architect, an exhibit designer for the museum exhibits, a structural engineer for the building and many other disciplines to ensure the details. of the vision established during the discovery phase and the diagram. conception are accomplished.
