Latest vaccine deployment: Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya

CAPE TOWN – Rwanda has opened up vaccination against Covid-19 for people 18 and over, Uganda has made vaccination compulsory for teachers and Kenya is targeting 10 million vaccinations by the end of the year.

Rwanda

On Monday, Rwanda’s third phase of vaccination opened for people 18 and over in its capital, Kigali, according to the country’s health ministry on Sunday.

Kigali is the most densely populated city in Rwanda, generating half of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).

Over the next two weeks, 90% of Kigali is expected to be vaccinated due to the implementation of the country’s third phase of immunization.

More than a million people were vaccinated on Sunday as the country aims to vaccinate 30% of more than 13 million people by the end of 2021.

On August 19, Rwanda received 200,000 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine from China and nearly 500,000 doses of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine from the United States.

There are a cumulative total of more than 82,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and 1,010 deaths, according to statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday.

Uganda

Janet Museveni, who is Uganda’s Minister of Education and Sports as well as the first lady, ‘sounded the alarm’ for all teachers, non-teaching staff and people 18 and over to get vaccinated .

“Why an alarm? Because we talked about vaccination and people don’t take it seriously, and yet we all want educational institutions to open up, ”Museveni said.

“I want you to know, teachers, that we are going to ask principals and principals to be strict. To ensure that no teacher who is not vaccinated is allowed to go to class or go to school, ”she continued.

Museveni reiterated that teachers without a vaccination record and therefore not vaccinated will not be admitted to educational institutions.

The latest Health Ministry update on Saturday shows a cumulative total of more than 118,000 confirmed cases and nearly 3,000 deaths, while more than 1.2 million doses of the vaccine have been administered.

On August 20, Health Minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero announced that nine million Johnson & Johnson vaccines were due to arrive in September from the African Union and that an additional 18 million doses of the Sinopharm vaccine were expected to arrive in phases. by October.

Kenya

The Kenyan government has set a target of 10 million vaccinations by the end of 2021, which represents 18% of the country’s population, according to the health ministry on Monday.

To help them in their efforts, the first shipment of nearly 900,000 doses of the Moderna Covid-19 vaccine arrived in Kenya on Monday, donated by the United States.

Principal Health Secretary Susan Mochache also thanked the governments of France, Britain, Greece and Denmark for the cumulative contribution of more than 1.1 million doses of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine.

The BBC reported that Monday was the deadline for compulsory vaccination of public service workers in Kenya.

Civil service chief Joseph Kinyua earlier this month ordered the civil service to be vaccinated or face the consequences.

Nonetheless, more than 2.3 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine were administered on Sunday, the country’s health ministry reported.

There has been a cumulative total of nearly 230,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19, with more than 4,400 cumulative deaths.
