Memorial Hermann reminds all women to put their health first

With Women’s Health Week and Mother’s Day both falling in May, there’s no better time for women to schedule an appointment with their healthcare provider to make sure they prioritize their own health and well-being.

Below, Dr. Anisha Farishta, OB/GYN affiliated with Hermann Sugar Land Memorial Hospital and Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, explains the importance of health checkups, why expectant mothers should also seek out prenatal and postnatal care. that the comprehensive health services for women available at Hermann Memorial.

Question: What health checks should women have regularly?

To respond: The COVID-19 pandemic has unfortunately not only canceled celebrations such as weddings and graduations, it has also caused many people to postpone or cancel routine health visits, which are essential to maintain and protect your health.

It is important to see your primary care physician and OB/GYN for routine screenings, which may include cervical cancer screenings, mammograms, colonoscopies, blood pressure monitoring, and bone density screenings, based on age-appropriate guidelines.

These screenings give doctors the chance to notice subtle but significant changes that can impact your overall health and well-being, allowing doctors to assess and treat any issues long before you experience symptoms.

The US Task Force on Preventive Services recommends Pap tests starting at age 21, annual mammograms starting at age 40, colonoscopies starting at age 45, and bone density scans starting at age 65. These standard guidelines may change based on an individual’s personal and family medical history. .

Memorial Hermann offers these screenings along with other important screenings such as diabetes and thyroid screening, cholesterol screening, mental health screening, STD screening, and vaccinations.

Regardless of your age, seeing your doctor to catch conditions early when they are most treatable is a good idea. The earlier we identify a problem, the better the overall outcome.

Question: Why is prenatal and postpartum care so important for pregnant women?

To respond: Pregnancy is filled with many changes and challenges. Early and regular prenatal care is important for a healthy pregnancy and childbirth.

Meeting with your OB/GYN allows for early identification of risk factors and complications and intervention as needed. It also gives patients the opportunity to speak to their doctor to allay any concerns they may have, especially as we know that COVID-19 has led to increased fear, anxiety and isolation in our pregnant patients.

Patients can count on their doctor and the hospital for much-needed support during the prenatal and postpartum period. Memorial Hermann Women’s Services offers virtual maternity tours, sibling classes and breastfeeding information sessions to help mothers prepare for the arrival of their little ones.

To respond: In addition to comprehensive maternity and gynecological care, Memorial Hermann also offers state-of-the-art breast imaging services, pelvic floor health services, bone health scans, cardiac care, colon cancer screening exams and sleep medicine services.

Question: Many women have missed their regular screening appointments over the past two years as an indirect result of the COVID-19 pandemic. What advice would you give to someone who has to go on a date?
