National Night Out promotes community relations | News, Sports, Jobs

On Tuesday, Kish Park was overflowing with visitors, there to take part in the second Combined National Night, hosted by Mifflin County, Lewistown and Granville Township Regional Police.

The same with Myers Park in Mifflintown – and similar locations across the state and country.

The first National Night Out – in 1984 – was an outgrowth of the National Association of Town Watch, founded in suburban Philadelphia. That year, more than 2.5 million people participated, in 400 communities in 23 states.

Not quite 40 years later, National Night Out is celebrated in every state, in more than 15,000 communities, by nearly 40 million neighbors.

The annual community-building event promotes community partnerships with police in an effort to make neighborhoods safer. The event has grown to include many city departments and civic groups.

National Night Out is a chance for everyone to see what their community has to offer – and to thank those who make the community a better and safer place to live.
